What image is best? Does your camera matter?

Stemming from a video that I saw the other day:

Does the camera your using matter?

YES. AND NO.

I outwardly say “the right tool for the job.” The brand doesn’t matter.

1. Is it the right tool for what you’re capturing?

2. What are your, or your client’s, requirements for output?

3. Does it match your budget?

4. What kind of shooting conditions will you be encountering?

For what I do photography-wise, Olympus hits the mark 99.9% of the time. Anything more than that, I have to rent.

Facebook Poll - Results:

I recently decided to put a facebook poll up to see what people preferred without knowing the camera.

Votes: 3.5 votes for photo one & 5.5 votes for photo two.

Now, the reason why one person voted for both was that the person enjoyed photo one more, but photo two was technically sharper and better from a technical perspective.

Output:

Note: Only editing done is some white balance and exposure to get the output closer to the same, and some cropping to make sure the composition is the same.

Photo #1 was shot with the Canon 5D Mark II and 50mm F1.4 @ 1.4, ISO200, 1/3200

Photo #2 (winner) was shot with the Olympus E-M1 Mark II and 45mm F1.2 @ 1.2, ISO200, 1/2000

Conclusion:

I’ve heard it said ”No one makes a bad camera anymore. You’re just a bad photographer,” and I don’t disagree. You can have the most expensive piece of gear in the world, but still, take terrible photos. So let’s not focus on the equipment so much, and focus on taking pictures. …but I mean, Olympus did win this one ;) haha.

What are your thoughts?

Notes: Before I get some comments, I thoroughly understand the focal length of the lenses differ, and the 50mm F1.4 lens is somewhat soft at F1.4, but I was shooting wide open for both. And full disclosure, if you don’t know who I am, I’m an Olympus Employee.
